Privacy, in plain words
BookWit is made for students, many of them under 13. Here is exactly what we collect, who can see it, and why.
What we collect
- A first name or nickname, an email address (or Sign in with Apple), and birth year.
- The books on a student's shelf, pages read, reading time, ratings, notes, quotes and reviews.
- School and homeroom, if the student joins with a code.
We don't collect location, contacts, or advertising identifiers. There are no ads in BookWit.
Who can see what
| Data | Student | Approved friends | Linked parent | School staff |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shelf and ratings | Yes | Yes | Yes | No |
| Private notes | Yes | No | No | No |
| Quotes marked “share with my crew” | Yes | Yes | No | No |
| Pages and reading time | Yes | No | Yes | Totals only |
“Totals only” means sums per school or homeroom. Staff can't look up an individual student's reading.
Students under 13
A student under 13 can track books and write notes right away. Friends and book clubs stay locked until a parent links their account with a one-time code, and the parent approves each new friend. Students can only add friends by exchanging codes; there is no search and no messaging with strangers.
AI features
Recaps, quizzes and review drafts run on the student's iPhone with Apple Intelligence; notes aren't sent anywhere for these. Scanning a cover or shelf sends that photo to our AI provider (Anthropic) to identify the books, and recommendations send the titles, ratings and tags on the student's shelf. Chapter soundscapes send only public book details (title, author, genre) and the chapter number to compose music (ElevenLabs).
Deleting data
Students can delete their account in the app (Profile → Delete my account). Everything they own is removed. Parents can ask us to delete a child's account at any time by emailing [PRIVACY CONTACT EMAIL].
